Gabriel V.
Private tutor in Downham Market, United Kingdom
Education
PhD in Biological Physics from University of Oxford (2008) MPhys in Physics (first class) from University of Oxford (2004) I have published research articles and book chapters in leading scientific journals, and given technical and popular scientific talks around the world. Besides academia, I have also applied my scientific expertise in industry, and am the holder of several patents that are now being commercially exploited.
Experience
One of my greatest strengths and joys is in explaining complex topics in a clear and concise way. My approach is based on my experiences as a tutor, interviewer, mentor and employer. Over a period of ten years, I have tutored secondary school students, university undergraduates, university postgraduates (both Masters and doctoral students), interns in companies, and my own employees. I also find it helpful to reflect on my own experiences as a student, including during my studies for GCSEs and A-Levels and in countless tutorials and lectures at university. I take pride in making physics and maths intuitive for my students so that they can tackle problems fearlessly. I believe that effective tutoring requires a deep knowledge and love of the subject matter, and strong empathy with the student as an individual. I first try to understand what motivates each student, what understanding of the subject they already have, and what challenges they might be facing. To ensure that the student learns effectively, I am continually sensitive to their self-esteem and motivation, and test their understanding in a rigorous but non-confrontational way. My broad experience of applying physics and maths in the real world allows me to keep students motivated with vivid and convincing illustrations of any topic. I have been told that I am exceptionally patient and have an infectious enthusiasm. On a practical level, I employ whatever technique is best suited for the particular student and topic. Besides pen and paper, occasionally great benefit can come from drawing pictures, performing simple practical experiments, and seeing photographs and computer simulations.
